Civil engineering works
This weir complex regulates the level of water in the River Neder-Rijn, which means that it is closed for some 265 days a year. Ships are then able to pass through a lock 220 metres long. Alongside this lock is the weir, consisting of two abutments and a central pier slung between which are two so-called visor gates. The weir service buildings sit atop concrete piers supported by arches and reached up a steel spiral stair. These concrete assemblies give the complex its distinctive civil engineering look.
