PILOT'S HOUSES VLISSINGEN
P.F. SMAGGE, -1910, Spuistraat 59-65, Vlissingen
These four freestanding houses were built for the Belgian pilots who used to conduct ships across the Westerschelde to the port of Antwerp. Born in Flushing (Vlissingen) but resident in Antwerp where he had also studied, the architect/contractor Petrus Smagge came into contact with Art Nouveau, a style that resonates in these monumental white facades emblazoned with red motifs and in many of the details. In Vlissingen (Flushing) they call this the 'Antwerp style'.
