Scattered about Maastricht's inner urban area in a number of historic premises is the Limburg State University. One of them, a former Jesuit monastery, has been extended with new-build half tucked under the existing building and half-sunken in the garden, containing the main entrance and a lecture hall/auditorium. The latter, which doubles as representative space, fans out in plan, a move visible in the concrete roof structure. The tempered interior is enlivened with murals in vivid colours done by the Amandebele group of artists from South Africa.
