The eco-district of Lanxmeer is an initiative of EVA, an ecological centre for education, information and advice. The available site in Culemborg is partly developed with housing and otherwise given over to business units, green space and water collection. Its future residents, who have a major say in managing the public space on site, collaborated on the project from the start. Most dwellings are ranged round communal courtyards. Solar collectors and sunrooms are the visible hallmarks of the district's sustainable architecture; rainwater for flushing toilets, purification of grey water and the use of black water to produce biogas are other aspects of an enlightened approach to environmental issues. Live/work units, vegetable gardens, cycle routes, railway station and town centre within easy reach - these are the mainstays of a sustainable urbanism.
