Lots of floor space is required for displaying furniture, preferably with an abundance of partitions suggesting a domestic intimacy. The five levels of this unarticulated cube-shaped building step up round a central well of 6.5 x 11 metres. The first floor cantilevers as a roof to shelter potential shoppers looking in at the display windows on the ground floor. Daylight once entered through glass tiles in the roof to flood the insides of the mute facades. The central well does daylighting duty on the second and third floors. Broads stairs lead visitors round the well past sales floors which spiral upwards. Between 1988 and 2014 the building was taken over by the Donner bookstore.
