BUILDING TYPE:
Freestanding houses

The clients, a psychologist couple with a home practice, wanted to be able to experience the unfathomable in their house. A spiralling stack of plateaus, its spaces spill over into one another. The children's rooms are sunken, the living room gives on to the terrace and the water, the kitchen is set 40 centimetre higher and a workroom and the master bedroom are reached up a stair. Parts of the building bleed together too: the undulating roof becomes a terrace and the brick wall in the kitchen a stair. Armed with their DogmA manifesto, the architects have turned away from spectacle architecture and sought to create a timeless building that eschews architectural trends.
