Freestanding houses

This one-storey residence for the industrial designer A.R. Cordemeyer, who worked for Gispen, has a centrally placed living room with a taller roof so that sunlight pours in on all sides along the top edge of the walls through upper lights. The street-facing bedrooms either side of the living room enfold a roofed terrace and sport large areas of glass that turn the corner. The frontage combines white painted brickwork with areas of fair-faced brick. These are set slightly back from the white brick surfaces, which seem to occupy independent planes as a result. As usual, the white-framed windows and doors are painted in primary colours. The interior is particularly rich in De Stijl colours. The house has been enlarged on the garden side twice, first in the 1960s and then in the 1990s.
