In the expansion scheme for the left bank of the Maas, the Zuiderpark belt was defined as a 750 metre wide, three kilometre long strip, a green zone between the pre-war districts and the new developments of Pendrecht and Zuidwijk. A major consideration in designing the park was that, rather than being ornamental, it should compensate for the lack of outdoor space for active recreation in the older districts. Hence the lion's share of the programme is taken up with sports fields, a swimming pool, playgrounds and playing fields, a boating lake and personal allotments. Part of the park was forfeited when the Ahoy' sports and entertainment complex was built. The park has recently been thoroughly renovated.
