Vilmos Huszár had little success as a painter but had a flourishing practice as a designer. He saw advertising as an art form: ‘It is in the street, in front of the public at large, most of whom never visit an art collector or go to museums, it is for these that the highest attainable in art should be exhibited … Whoever believes in “Art for the People” has no better means of achieving their goal than with the art of advertising.’ Beginning in 1925, he produced for the Rotterdambased Vittoria Egyptian Cigarette Company billboard advertising, murals and even a horse-drawn advertising cart. For Miss Blanche cigarettes he designed the stylized logo of a smoking lady in a hat. Wall advertisements for Miss Blanche can still be seen in Culemborg, in Leiden (corner of Herengracht and Oude Rijn) and in Bergen op Zoom (Parallelweg 14).
