ARCHITECT(URAL OFFICE): Willem Marinus Dudok BUILDING TYPE: Buildings for education PUBLICATIONS: Bouwkundig Weekblad 1924 p. 327; Bouwbedrijf 1925 p. 12; H. van Bergeijk - Willem Marinus Dudok Architect-stedebouwkundige 1884-1974, 1995RELATED BUILDINGS: Dudok in Hilversum Dudok Schools
With a Z-shaped plan comprising gymnasium, two central layers of classrooms, and a service wing with recreation room, this school exemplifies Dudok's utterly original synthesis of Traditionalism and Amsterdam School architecture with elements of De Stijl and Functionalism. Using a careful balance of cubist masses, horizontals and verticals, large-scale elements, and details, plane and line, the composition -particularly at the entrance with tower- has an almost sculptural quality.
