The railway station at Schiedam was once one of the finest designs by Koenraad van der Gaast, architect to the Dutch railways. Like that of his predecessors Van Ravesteyn and Schelling, his work has been demolished or mutilated. In 1998 the main hall roofed with prefabricated timber hypar shells and an office tower that sat well in the overall composition made way for a new combined Metro and train station for the Benelux Line. All that remains is the roof above the platforms, consisting as it does of X-shaped supporting yokes each with a box girder on the central platform, with trusses to hinged columns in the facade.
