JOPIE HUISMAN MUSEUM
J.H. WOUDA, G.J. VAN DER SCHAAF, -1992, Noard 6, Workum
ARCHITECT(URAL OFFICE):
Henk Wouda
Gurbe van der Schaaf
BUILDING TYPE:
Museums and exhibition buildings
Devoted to the work of the painter Jopie Huisman (1922-2000), who enunciated the desire to show his work in a space 'as simple as shit', the museum consists of two long, narrow traditionally built masses stitched seamlessly into the protected townscape. Here are the galleries where the paintings are hung. The space between the two contains the entrance beneath a glazed roof structure of Corten steel portals. The rusty steel is a reminder of Huisman’s former trade of iron merchant.
