MUSEUM HET VALKHOF
UN STUDIO, 1995-1999, Kelfkensbos 59, Nijmegen
Clad in a bluish-green glass, the museum stands against the top of a lateral moraine overlooking the river Waal. Inside, the principal organizing element is the broad stair which also has a key role to play in the building’s supporting structure. A rippling aluminium ceiling follows visitor movement and intensity: short waves where many are expected to gather, long waves in the exhibition spaces. These last-named are laid out in parallel zones along the length of the building. The many openings in the partitions throw up a wealth of diagonal sight lines and routes through the collection.
