Some of the meadowland once belonging to the Van Hoboken family (Land van Hoboken) was given over to villas (Private House Merkes, Private House Boevé, Private House Kraayeveld en Private House Sonneveld) and the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum and some became Museum Park, a classic symmetrical garden with a water feature, terminating in the monument to Public Works director G.J. de Jongh. When the Kunsthal was built, the rest of the grounds was redesigned to a plan by the French landscape architect Yves Brunier in association with OMA. The area divides into four zones: a museum zone containing the Kunsthal and the Natural History Museum, a romantic garden, a raised multi-purpose area in black asphalt and a forecourt. In 2006 part of the park was levelled when work began on an underground parking facility.
