All that remains of Floriade 2002, the major national horticultural exhibition held once every decade, are ‘Big Spotters’ Hill’, an observation point crowned with an art piece by Auke de Vries, and the Hydra Pier, the built-to-last host pavilion of Haarlemmermeer municipality designed by Asymptote. Jutting into the Floriade lake, the Hydra Pier is marked form-wise by an inflected roof line and a curve dictated by a glass concavity and an aluminium convexity. Visitors approach the pavilion between two halves of a double waterfall and proceed beneath the sagging glass ceiling to the entrance.
