The City Building is the first project in the compaction programme for the Laurens quarter. On plan it can be construed as a quadrangular block cut open on one of the sides, part of which is folded back to the centre. The oblique line this produces opens up a route to the hall of J.J.P. Oud's Savings Bank with which the City Building forms an urban block. Vertically too the mass folds back in steps to the surrounding buildings. Because of these fold lines, what is in itself a sleek glass building can be experienced differently from different vantage-points.
