BUILDING TYPE:
Industrial and public-utility buildings

This shed, 138 metres long and 43 metres wide, was built for conveying and storing bales of cotton. It is constructed entirely of reinforced concrete in the interests of fire safety and divided with fireproof walls into five compartments. The massive concrete structure has no pile foundations but rests on a sandbank in the river Maas. The building also boasted a sprinkler system, quite a novelty in those days. An expressive concrete water tower once stood alongside it to ensure a constant water pressure. This tower was largely demolished in 1966, with only a lump of concrete left as a reminder. There are plans to reallocate the building, at present used for storage, as a cultural facility.
