The Dance and Theatre faculty of the ArtEZ Institute of the Arts is an underground extension to Gerrit Rietveld's academy building (1957-1962). All that can be seen of it at ground level is its flat glass roof. Below this are three levels about a central light court. This last-named space is cut through and spatially defined by four large steel struts, there to prevent the walls from collapsing inwards. The main space is reached along a tunnel leading from the Rietveld building's main entrance. From there the main route follows an aerial walkway and stairs to the dance studios and theatre on the 'ground floor'. Partitions between the light court and the classrooms are largely of glass to give an overall view of the learning areas.
