Besides the 'customary office slab' 104 metre high structured around four concrete piers at the corners, this Provincial House consists of a low-rise block of ceremonial functions including the State Room, marked by expressive roof forms. Beneath this block is a parking lot. Maaskant parried the low-level if extensive criticism aimed at this monumental, expensive building (accusations of delusions of grandeur, and a Fascist approach) by setting up a monetary prize for the advancement of architectural criticism. His signature in concrete is to be found by the entrance. In the 1990s, the building was renovated by Klunder Architecten and a new office extension armed with a shading system of aluminium slats was grafted onto the low-rise.
