Plans to build the Essalam Mosque with its two 50 metre tall minarets caused no end of fuss among locals and politicians. Traditional in layout, this mosque was designed for the Moroccan community by the thoroughly Dutch architects Molenaar & Van Winden. Its concrete structure has a cladding of stone panels. The ground floor contains the non-religious amenities including a shop and activity rooms. The men's prayer rooms are on the first floor. The third floor, which is where the women pray, also has the library, the imam's room and offices and classrooms. A central well below the dome ties all these spaces together.
