Founded in 1818 by Johannes van den Bosch, the Benevolent Society built a colony in Veenhuizen where the criminalized poor could experience the salutary and instructional effects of working the land. The village and the colony buildings have since been given listed status. In the colony grounds near the main building, Kempe Thill converted a number of old sheds and workplaces into a crafts museum. The commission was in large part conceived as a call to clear away all sheds, shelters and barns. Three buildings were partly restored and partly added to, retaining as much as possible of the original symmetry of the facades. The most distinctive additions are the large steel frames with their infill of glazing and large glass revolving doors.
