Two dockside roads, Piet Heinkade and Oostelijke Handelskade, link the centre of Amsterdam with Oostelijk Havengebied, the eastern docks area. A string of major architectural entities stand along the quayside organized around a number of old warehouses. The buildings serving public ends, including the Muziekgebouw, a hotel and the passenger terminal for cruise ships, are set closer to the centre. Offices and apartment buildings complete the picture. A handful of existing warehouses were stepping-off points for new-build. One of these, De Zwijger, has retained its basic form though its ground floor has been broken open to accept a bridge (Jan Schaefferbrug) designed by Ton Venhoeven. Restored by Van Stigt, the building contains eating and drinking establishments, function rooms and work spaces for the creative industry. Rietlandpark has four apartment towers by VenhoevenCS and five office towers by Hans van Heeswijk standing singly in a green zone.
