This well-conceived example of an office building with its horizontal bands of fenestration stands alone on the edge of the old town, self-assured, defiant and monolithic. Office floors are overhanging slabs on two loadbearing concrete piers. Artificial lighting, double-glazing and thick well-insulated walls render the building independent of conditions outside. Later conversions only served to destroy the original transparency which featured tinted glass. To compound matters, the monumental entrance sculpture by Zadkine was removed despite protests. Maaskant also designed the Tomado Factory.
