A sturdily constructed and functional concrete warehouse from 1961 has been converted into an archive store for the International Institute for Social History. The two uppermost storeys contain archives only; the lower storeys combine these with public functions including a reception area, a reading room, conference facilities, an exhibition gallery, a canteen and offices. Here, the otherwise introverted building is spatially opened up as much by copious glazing in the facades as by the void at the canteen.
