The Schiemond area of Delfshaven was built in the early 1980s in the part between the dyke and the river, where the Stokvis trading company, the Wilton shipyard and the Hoboken distillery once had their premises. Three residential tower blocks of increasing height (11, 14 and 17 storeys) terminate the area on the west side. The towers are rotated towards the water to give the flats a wider view and more sunlight. They stand atop a four metre high plinth clad in black quarry stone, a necessity in view of their position beyond the dyke. The outer walls have horizontal bands; the north wall is rendered, the south wall has a cladding of plain concrete panels and the east and west walls combine the two techniques.
