BUILDING TYPE:
Housing

This housing complex sits on a busy main road and a railway viaduct at the edge of the town centre. The materiality, housing typology and the 'gateway' emphasized by the pair of glass needles all refer to the historical architecture in the centre and to the siting on the former city walls. Yet the brickwork is saved from a historicist fate by the detailing. The undulating frontage with a countermovement on the ground floor presents an unbroken elevation to the passing traffic. Inside, these rippling facades suggest bays though this does nothing to disrupt the continuity of the surface outside.
