BUILDING TYPE:
Health service buildings

This convalescent centre is located in hilly terrain, where it terminates a clearing in the woods containing a cluster of buildings. The five-storey centre is anchored at one end in a hill. Storey-height steel trusses in the side walls allow the other end to cantilever 14 metres. The principal public amenities and spaces, including a swimming pool, sports centre, restaurant and a therapeutic theatre, are at entry level. Outpatient facilities and convalescent rooms occupy the upper storeys. Up on the roof is a Ronald McDonald House where the parents of convalescing children can lodge and meet. The external facades have a finish of brown anodized aluminium cladding panels alternating with wooden slats. The theatre part of the projecting head end has storey-height, partly angled structural glass.
