Aldo van Eyck was commissioned to design a health centre for the Filmwijk neighbourhood as part of Bouw-RAI II. From outside the building looks hermetic, a fortress even, judging by the phalanx of ‘periscopes’ poking up like battlements along the north facade. Internally the design proves to be another illustration of Van Eyck’s ‘house as a small city’ theme. The various services and their glazed reception areas are ranged in orderly fashion along a toplit central ‘street’. At each end of the street, and within the centre’s walls, is an open-air patio where children can play. The entrances are located at places where the outer walls sweep inward.
