The abandoned site of the former NDSM shipyard on the northern shore of the IJ inlet is now a model project of Amsterdam City's 'cultural incubator policy'. It offers the creative sector (visual artists, media companies, theatre groups and the like) relatively cheap space to work and occasionally live where they can freely develop; this paves the way for developing the area further. A number of companies have already settled in and around the shipyard. This free and informal development is best represented by the 'studio city' erected in the large shipbuilding shed. Call it interior urbanism. Here a network of steel racks with internal streets in-between has been fleshed out with workshops and office space by the artists themselves.
