The RAI complex was enlarged on three occasions (1951-1961, 1961-1965 and 1969) to include a congress centre of auditoria and three exhibition halls, one large (97.5 x 97.5 m.) and two smaller (67.5 x 67.5 m.). All three are spanned by space frames of equal size, that of the largest being rotated through 45° to allow twice as much column-free exhibition space. The same facade composition of opaque panelling, glazing and translucent panelling tilted 45° has been maintained throughout the exterior.
Bentem Crouwel designed the newest addition: the Elicium.
