'A bicycle shed is a building. Nearly everything that encloses space on a scale sufficient for a human being to move in is a building; the term architecture applies only to buildings designed with a view to aesthetic appeal.' This transparent three-storey cycle shed serving student flats gives this statement (the opening words of Nikolaus Pevsner's History of European Architecture) a new dimension. The all-steel building wears a curved steel cap with a plastic peak. Vertical circulation is along broad, gently sloping stairs provided with bicycle wheel-sized channels.
