ARCHITECT(URAL OFFICE):
Piet Kramer

ARTIST:
Hildo Krop

BUILDING TYPE:
Civil engineering works

In his capacity as Public Works Architect until his retirement in 1952, Piet Kramer designed some 500 bridges, of which 220 or so were built. He was further responsible for the small buildings whose function linked them to these bridges, such as boathouses, electrical substations and bridgemaster's houses. These often combine with the bridge in an architecturally unified ensemble. The bridges have done much, if almost imperceptibly, to colour the Amsterdam School look of Amsterdam today. The example shown here is representative of Kramer's more elaborate bridge designs.
