After a protracted campaign against the threat of office development, housing was given conclusive priority on Bickerseiland with the construction of 158 dwellings set in two virtually closed blocks and two peripheral developments along Grote Bickersstraat. The facades play a rhythmic game with jutting balconies and receding bays. Before then De Ley had worked on a small-scale infill on the canal (Bickersgracht) which unlike the later new-build imitates local elements such as mansard roofs and bay windows.
