The ensemble consists of a laboratory (two layers of offices and three research blocks), electrical substation, pumproom and the boilerhouse itself. This contains two coal-bunkers set 16 metres above the boilers between three narrow zones of stairs and structural elements (concrete slabs). The facade includes large concrete window elements to protect the glass from coal and dust; these combine with the eye-catching bunkers and tall chimneys in a visually satisfying composition.
