Having undergone restoration in 1971, the Kröller-Müller museum was extended between 1975 and 1977 with new galleries, an auditorium, offices and workshops. Quist moved the entrance to the new section tucked away among the beeches in unobtrusive proximity to the old block. Spread across the site are enclosed cube-shaped blocks containing galleries and facilities linked by glazed corridors which continually confront the visitor with the natural surroundings. The exhibition galleries are indirectly lit through an ingenious sawtooth roof structure. The black aluminium frames of the connecting passages stretch from floor to beyond the taut aluminium ceiling. Together with this open relationship with the woods, the view out from the enclosed gallery spaces is sometimes 'framed' as an extra exhibit. Quist's extension makes reference to various architectural trends. The lighting pays tribute to Van de Velde's original building, the painstaking detail and unbroken glazed surfaces acknowledge Mies van der Rohe, and the free placing of walls in an orthogonal system points to De Stijl and to Mies's Neoplastic villas.
