Museums and exhibition buildings

Built in the former grounds of the villa De Zonnehof, Rietveld's exhibition pavilion was a follow-up to his pavilions in Venice (1954) and Park Sonsbeek in Arnhem (1955). Its design is based on a module of three metres and is six metres tall and 18 metres square. The wall planes of this exhibition pavilion include areas of glazed brick in primary colours. Daylight floods in through double-height glazing and roof lights underlaid with a grid of metal strips. An upper gallery partially encircles this central skylight. Rietveld's unerring placement of wall planes and columns within the basic rectangular space gives a disarming spatial complexity within an immediately surveyable whole.
