At the rear of C.H. Peters’ monumental main building for the Netherlands Court of Audit is this extension designed by Aldo and Hannie van Eyck. It was through the intercession of Kees Rijnboutt, then Government Architect, that the eminence grise of Dutch architecture landed his first government commission. Deploying the strategy of decorative billowing forms he had used at Estec, Van Eyck ignored the land use plan and building lines and placed a freestanding, capriciously shaped building in the back yard. The office interiors for this super-respectable organization are a riot of brightly coloured ceramic tiles.
