Town Hall Terneuzen

Van den Broek & Bakema’s original town hall (1972) stands along the waters of Westerschelde where the old village and the new outlying districts meet. A robust use of material and an expressive articulation of functions elicited a sculptural building that fits remarkably well in its context of shipping and waterways. A new near-cube housing the municipal offices to a design by Koen van Velsen welds the old centre of Terneuzen to the town hall. Also in a literal sense, for both buildings are linked below ground by a volume tucked into the dyke. The new portion is of a neutral cast, its blue tiles almost melting from view against the sky.
