The centre of Zaandam is being radically recast on the back of an urban plan by Sjoerd Soeters. Soeters' plan revivifies the old street pattern, refills a dry canal with water and injects a vibrant ambience into the dispassionate, dull town centre by introducing scaled-up versions of the 'quaint' stylistic traits of Zaan district architecture.
Soeters himself designed the City Hall that is located next to the railway station.
