Its expressive architecture of yellow brick and articulated horizontal window bands makes this Dalton School a typical product of the Hague School of architects. The tall middle portion at dead centre contains a monumental staircase and boasts vertical slits of Art Deco-style stained glass. An ode to the sun in mosaic-form also graces the staircase. Some years later Brandes built a housing complex round a nearby square (Pinksterbloemplein) in the same style. The lines of its blocks deflect to present a grand view of the school across the water.
