These two schools were developed along identical lines yet are dissimilar because of their different orientation and clients. The infants’ school occupies the ground floor with its own entrance under the outer stair head. The primary school is in two storeys at half-levels to each other. Its stairs shape and enfold the most important spatial element, the central well, and can double as seating for activities in the hall. The layout of each classroom is governed by the position of the small kitchen unit within it. This pair was the first step in an impressive succession of schools designed by Hertzberger, mainly primary schools to begin with (Almere, Papendrecht) but later also pre-vocational secondary schools (Montessori College Oost, Leerpark Dordrecht).
