BUILDING TYPE:
Religious buildings

In this combination with a cultural centre the mosque has its mihrab (the imam or leader's niche) facing towards Mecca. Every other orientation and hierarchy has been avoided. Columns of the concrete frame are provided on the upper floor with capitals of welded steel plate. On these rests the roof, a diagonal grid of steel girders. The building mixes exotica (minarets, cupola, mihrab) with modern materials and forms. Colour and decoration are geared to the tastes of Surinam Moslems.
