PETROL SERVICE STATION HOUTEN
PH. SAMYN, 1997-2000, De Staart / Hoofdveste, Houten
Philippe Samyn is the designer responsible for the new-look Fina service stations in Belgium. The one he designed here in Houten has since become a Total station following a spate of fusions. Including a wash bay, it sports curved screens of perforated steel to reduce wind nuisance and a lightly raked roof with slit rooflights held aloft by slender steel columns. As a result it lacks the unfriendly air of most service stations. The shop attaches to the roof structure and the side facing the pumps is all glass. Much thought has been given to the lighting at night. See also the Houten fire station.
