If the old Bijlmer station was set square to the tracks, the new one incorporates the diagonal line of Arena Boulevard. In addition, the daylighting has been vastly improved, as has the station's link-up with the new developments on the north side. Necessary though these ground-level upgrades are, the new station gets really spectacular at platform height. The organically modelled station roof rests on undulating steel triangular trusses set lengthwise. From these, steel fins thrust to bear aloft the roof which is partly of wood and partly of glass. At the diagonal underpass, the sections of roof shift one above the other like ice floes. Here too is a long void enabling the building's full height to be experienced from the station concourse.
