G.J. de Jongh was the dominant and energetic director of Rotterdam Public Works from 1879 to 1910 and was responsible for the development of port and city. The day after he died the council decided to devote a memorial to him. This was 1917. After years of indecision D.G. van Beuningen, director of the Coal Trading Association, saw to it in 1933 that a memorial would be placed in Museum Garden behind the then new Boijmans Museum. Van der Steur integrated a 12 metre high granite obelisk in his garden design. The sculptor Leendert Bolle made a bronze plaque and bronze railings incorporating episodes from city life in De Jongh's day, as in a strip cartoon. Jaap Gidding's mosaic shows the development of Rotterdam's docks. Hendrik Chabot designed the tables of statistics.
