BUILDING TYPE:
Special accommodation

Even before the war there had been plans to build a housing block for women living either singly or together. These had been drawn up by a foundation devoted to providing accommodation for working women. The eventual building was even designed by a woman, Miss Jansen, an architect working for the firm of Kuiper, Gouwetor & De Ranitz. Its form is almost entirely dictated by the functional organization inside: 160 housing units in ten storeys, accessed from galleries, atop a basement of storage rooms. Each storey has 16 units, ten with three rooms, four with two rooms and two with one room. The building has structural walls whose thickness tapers from 44 to 22 centimetres, and concrete floors.
