Gian Piero Frassinelli

BUILDING TYPE:
Special accommodation

The 'house of four winds' is a collective housing block that owes its existence to the philosopher Fons Elders. Based on a cosmological order, it is oriented to the Pole Star. Each of the four corners where most of the communal facilities are housed, is dedicated to one of the Elements. The complex seeks to provide the conditions for a way of life that does away with the traditional relationship between being alone and enjoying contact with fellow occupants. Its architecture, which has been endlessly adapted, ultimately offers little more than a reflection of the Dutch obsession in the 1970s with the small-scale and seems light years away from the work of Superstudio, the radical Italian group of architects to whom Frassinelli belonged.
