This villa district of 42 plots sits on the rim of Zielhorst, an overspill area near Kattenbroek but built earlier (see also https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/1016" class="inline_link">Private House Wilbrink. Seven model villas were developed as scale models in a bid to interest potential clients in a house designed by one of the selected front-line Dutch architects. The most striking building in the entire park is unquestionably Piet Blom's 'Russian palace'. That Blom, whose earlier enthusiasms included kasbahs and https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/189" class="inline_link">cube houses, should then turn to the onion-domes of Russian architecture, admirably suited his client's ideas. H. de Waal, the property developer, who before then had given Ton Alberts free rein in designing a house, had this new one built for his wife, a Russian pianist. Imitation onion-domes terminate the service shafts, with one on the gatehouse as a dovecote.
