Looking for office space for his architectural practice that would allow him to combine living and working, Jan Hoogstad chose a run-down office building on Westerkade, part of the premises of the Van Ommeren shipping company. While renovating the facade, he crowned the building with a two-storey apartment with the air about it of a freestanding house. Its interior is informed by the central theme in Hoogstad's work, space, here incorporating his 'conservatory' model, a double-height living room whose glass walls give a magnificent prospect of the river.
