Originally this pier was almost exclusively used by the transatlantic shipping company Holland Amerika Lijn. Its https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/282" class="inline_link">headquarters have been refurbished as a hotel/restaurant. One of the first new buildings to join it is the https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/526" class="inline_link">Marine Simulator Centre designed by Sir Norman Foster, who also drew up the masterplan for Wilhelminapier. Foster went on to design the https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/1783" class="inline_link">World Port Center, the new headquarters of Rotterdam's port management corporation. Another foreign luminary, Renzo Piano, designed the https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/1784" class="inline_link">KPN Telecom office building at the foot of the https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/316" class="inline_link">Erasmus Bridge. Tall apartment buildings by Alvaro Siza (https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/2845" class="inline_link">New Orleans) and Cruz & Ortiz (San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia and Havana) are build on the south side of the pier alongside https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/1595" class="inline_link">Montevideo. In 2010 the 'Rotterdam' by OMA was started building.
